A Rangiora schoolboy has become an official Guinness World Record holder for the most backwards handsprings in one minute.

Brooklyn Joli successfully completed 54 backwards handsprings in front of 300 people at Rangiora High School.

"I was really tired after, real dizzy. Right after doing it my vision was real shaky," he told 1News.

The previous record was 35 backwards handsprings.

"I could already do more than that, so I thought 'why not?'" he said.

"My friends were really supportive, and cheered me on at school."

The Year 12 student received an official certificate from Guinness World Records for his achievement last month.

"I wanted to set it as high as possible," he said.

Brooklyn said it was just a hobby, and he was proud of his record.

His next goal is to break another parkour record — the most backflip burpees in one minute.
