Police have referred a 15-year-old boy to Youth Services after a Porirua store owner was left critical in an assault outside his shop.

The October 6 incident began when three men allegedly went to the store on Hartham Place.

"One of the males has entered the store and the victim has followed him outside before being assaulted," police said at the time.

Detective Sergeant Gary Ferguson said this morning that the victim remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"Police are working to support his family," Ferguson said.

"Police have spoken to a 15-year-old male in relation to the assault and he has been referred to Youth Services.

"We know this incident has caused considerable concern for retailers in the Porirua CBD," Ferguson added.

"Police will maintain an increased presence in the area to provide reassurance to those retailers and our wider community."

Anyone with information is urged to call 105.
