Netherlands beat South Africa in all-time World Cup upset

October 18, 2023

The Netherlands have beaten South Africa by 38 runs this morning in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Cricket World Cup.

In a rain-affected match in Dharamsala, the Dutch overcame a tough start with the bat to finish 245/8 from their 43 overs, before stifling the hard-hitting South Africans, bowling them out for just 207.

Scott Edwards starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 78, and he was well supported by lower order cameos from Roelof van der Merwe and Aryan Dutt, to help the Netherlands get 40 runs in the last three overs of their innings.

The spoils were shared with the ball, with the bowlers combining to run through South Africa's top order and reduce them to 44/4.

The South Africans, who prior to this game had looked like the form team of the tournament, were unable to recover, continuing to lose wickets before eventually being bundled out for 207 off the penultimate delivery.

The result sees the Netherlands jump off the bottom of the table above Sri Lanka, while South Africa sit in third place behind India and New Zealand.
