Watch: Aussie man fights giant kangaroo as it tried to drown dog

In perhaps the most Australian video in history, a man has filmed himself fighting off a kangaroo in a bid to save his pet dog.

Mildura's Mick Moloney filmed the bizarre encounter as he went for a walk near the Murray River on Sunday morning.

He told Sunrise he noticed one of his dogs - Hutchy - was missing.

It was then he saw a large kangaroo in the water.

“I saw a kangaroo ... with his arms in the water, basically just staring at me,” he said.

“Next thing you know, Hutchy came up gasping for air, water spilling out of his mouth and screaming his head off.

“I was like, ‘are you kidding me?’.”

With his initial attempts to scare off the roo unsuccessful, he leapt into the water and confronted it.

Moloney took a swing at the kangaroo. It replied in kind, knocking Moloney and his phone into the water.

That allowed Hutchy to break free and scramble to safety.

“I got a few (scratches),” Moloney told Sunrise.

“My forearm was killing me for most of the day. It was a bit of a punch on.”
