State Highway 1 has been closed in Marlborough following a truck crash this morning.

A truck and trailer carrying soil rolled south of Lake Grassmere, near Taimate Road, blocking the highway.

Police said the crash was reported around 7am and one person received minor injuries.

Waka Kotahi said the closure is expected to be "prolonged".

"Clearing the crash scene and the spilled soil is expected to take several hours to complete," Waka Kotahi said in a statement.

Drivers travelling between Canterbury and Marlborough are advised to take the inland route via Lewis Pass.

The inland route detour for north bound traffic is SH7, then SH65 at Springs Junction, right onto SH6, right onto SH63 onto SH1. Reverse for southbound traffic.

This detour will add an additional one hour and 45 minutes on a journey between Blenheim and Waipara.

"Drivers, particularly those with Picton ferry connections, must factor this delay into their travel plans," Waka Kotahi said.
