Police checkpoints uncover number of children improperly belted in

Officers 94 times over the last seven weeks found unrestrained or improperly restrained occupants.

Police have expressed disappointment after road checkpoints throughout the last seven weeks saw multiple drivers not wearing seatbelts or using car seats.

Officers conducted the checkpoints near schools and in townships, and 94 times found unrestrained or improperly restrained occupants.

Many of the occupants were children and in some cases there were up to five children unrestrained in vehicles.

Taupō road policing Sergeant Wayne Dickson said a number of five, six and seven-year-old children were sitting in normal seatbelts, rather than using an approved restraint.

Most drivers at fault said they owned car seats and booster seats but they were either at home or in another vehicle.

"Some drivers had a candid attitude about the safety risk and instead thought the Police checkpoints were an inconvenience," he said.

Dickson reminded drivers that it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure passengers under the age of 15 are properly and legally restrained.
