If your bicycle doesn't have a battery, then it's an acoustic — that's the tongue-in-cheek term that's been coined to refer to bikes that only use pedal power to move.
But if you prefer your saddle and spokes to be supercharged, you may well be a part of the growing army of Kiwis using a battery to power their rides.
E-bikes have revolutionised recreational cycling throughout New Zealand, and one resident from the South Island's Arrowtown couldn't be happier - he's even devoted a festival to e-bikes.
Dave Gibson is busy preparing for his annual e-bike festival, Cyclorama.
Hundreds of e-bikers and enthusiasts are set to descend on the picturesque town over Labour weekend. The free and non-competitive event will offer a range of original, curated rides spanning various interests and skill levels.
"Our target market is me. If I like it, hopefully, someone else will like it - I think they do," Gibson told Seven Sharp.
"We're going to have live music, and enough brands here so that you can literally try four or five bikes out and take them on a little bit of a ride."
Gibson told Crux: ”Last year many people didn't realise that the Festival Village welcomes more than just Cyclorama-registered bike riders.
"Anyone can come along and partake in an afternoon of good food, free entertainment, and a chance to learn more about e-biking, in one of the district’s most beloved settings.”
The area is increasingly becoming known for its hundreds of kilometres of off-road trails, and a recent report predicts that biking spend will soon reach 50% of Queenstown's ski visitor spend.
"I feel like we're on the crest of a wave," Gibson enthused.
Cyclorama will take place on 21/22 October.
