Tairāwhiti Police are investigating after a series of shootings in Gisborne overnight.
Police said they received several public reports of gunshots in the Stout Street/Taruheru Crescent area around 9.45pm.
Two vehicles of interest were seen, and a male in his 20s was shot in the leg.
Soon after, police said they received several more calls about shots being fired at a house on Rimu Street.
The shots came from a vehicle and a firearm was seen. Police believing the two incidents are gang-related.
Tairāwhiti area commander inspector Sam Aberahama said investigators are doing scene examinations today and continuing patrols.
“We would like to thank the numerous people who called in to police reporting these incidents, as the sooner we know, the quicker we can respond and help prevent further harm,” he said.
“Those people who called us have helped with that and I am hugely appreciative."
Aberahama said one of the vehicles of interest is in police's possession and further lines of inquiry are being followed to piece together what happened.
He asked Gisborne locals to call 111 immediately if they see any "suspicious or unsafe activity".
