Warning: Climate change could make beer taste worse

A new study has found hotter, longer and drier summers resulting from climate change could have an adverse effect on beer quality.

Hops are a key ingredient in the world's third most widely consumed beverage (after water and tea) – but they're under threat.

New research shows the quantity of European hops is declining and it's set to get worse.

The shift could also see your pint become more expensive.

"Accounting for almost 90% of all hop-growing regions, our results from Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovenia show that hop ripening started approximately 20 days earlier," the study's abstract said.

The bittering ingredient is also seeing changes to its acid levels.

Its led to a warning that growers need to adapt their methods. In some key areas, there's been a drop of nearly 20% output.

"Failure to adapt will jeopardise the profitability of hop growing in some areas," study co-author Martin Mozny told the BBC.

"The consequence will be lower production and a higher price for brewers."
