National Party leader Christopher Luxon has disagreed with ACT leader David Seymour's claim that potential coalition partner Winston Peters of New Zealand First is Aotearoa's least trustworthy politician.
On Breakfast this morning, Luxon said he hadn't had any private discussions with Peters since he said he'd work with NZ First.
"My first preference is to work in a National-ACT coalition," Luxon said. "I think that would be in the best interests of New Zealand.
"And yes, I will pick up the phone to Mr Peters and New Zealand First because I'm not gonna tolerate – and I don't think New Zealanders want to tolerate – another three years of Labour, Te Pāti Māori and the Greens, which would be a total disaster for New Zealand."
He was asked about Seymour's claim that Peters is New Zealand's least trustworthy politician. Luxon disagreed.
"I don't agree with that," he said. "I would just say to you, I will make that work."
The National leader pointed to his business experience.
"I've managed large executive teams with very big personalities here and around the world," he said.
"And we've returned the National Party to being a really high-performing team.
"I back myself and my abilities to make a coalition government work, no doubt about it.
"I will work with whatever the New Zealand people deliver on Saturday night."
