1News can now name the man charged with murdering his wife at a Mount Maunganui retirement village last night.
John Alfred Salter appeared at the Tauranga District Court this afternoon.
The 80-year-old was arrested at the Bayswater Retirement village in Pāpāmoa on Sunday night.
Police were called to the complex just before 7pm, where they discovered the body of 78-year-old Jean Ann Salter.
John Salter was remanded in custody until his next appearance at the High Court next month.
He was seated in the dock today, wearing a blue boiler suit and showing little emotion.
In a statement earlier this morning, retirement village operator Metlifecare said, "this is an extremely sad incident" and it extends its "sincere condolences to the families of the individuals involved".
"We are providing support to our other residents and staff who knew them and have engaged victim support to assist."
A Metlifecare spokesperson said police requested information, but as the matter is before the courts there is nothing further it can add.
Salter entered no plea, and name suppression was not sought by the Crown or defence.
