Strong gusts, heavy rain likely for top and east of North Island

October 7, 2023

The top and easternmost parts of the North Island will possibly face strong gusts into Monday, while Wairoa and Gisborne should brace for heavy rain all of tomorrow.

MetService said a "complex trough of low pressure" is likely to affect parts of the island on Sunday and Monday, with a few areas likely to experience severe gales in exposed areas and periods of heavy rain.

A strong wind watch is in place for Northland north of Kaitaia from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, as well as Bay of Plenty east of Whakatāne from 7pm Sunday through to 9am Monday.

Meanwhile, a heavy rain watch is in place from 6am to 8pm on Sunday for the Wairoa District and Tairawhiti/Gisborne south of Gisborne City, as rainfall "may approach warning criteria, especially about the ranges".

Affected locals are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather watches and warnings on MetService's website.
