Man charged over Auckland dairy stabbing

A 24-year-old man has been charged after a stabbing at an Auckland dairy yesterday.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing at a dairy on New Windsor Rd just after 10.40am on Thursday.

A man was rushed to Auckland Hospital in critical condition. He remains there in a serious condition.

A 24-year-old man was taken into custody and has now been charged with two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of resisting police.

Police said yesterday several shoppers had intervened in the stabbing and managed to restrain the offender until emergency services arrived.

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin praised the community's actions during the violent attack, calling those who helped "courageous".

"In any situation, our advice is for the public to avoid putting themselves in danger, but we absolutely commend their bravery and courage in stepping in to assist this morning.

"There are some courageous people in our community, and their actions may well have saved the man's life."

Police acknowledged the attack "will undoubtedly impact on the victims and those involved for the rest of their lives", and said support would be provided to those involved.

Neighbour Srini Singaraju told 1News he saw someone being carried from the dairy on a stretcher.

His daughter and her friends saw someone, covered in blood, running from the shop before being caught by police.

A block of shops including the dairy had been cordoned off by police.

Ratana Leng, who owns the nearby New Windsor Bakehouse, saw two police officers dragging a man out of the dairy around 11.30am before making an arrest.
