An Australian hostel needed to be evacuated after a fire started inside the room of a French backpacker due to a faulty e-bike battery.
Seventy people had to evacuate the Mad Monkey hostel today after the battery exploded, injuring one of the people inside the room. The other person escaped unscathed.
French backpacker Phillip is seen in the CCTV footage standing in the doorway of the room when the explosion happened. He said he was feeling "a little shocked, but I'm okay — I'm lucky to be here and intact".
New South Wales Fire and Rescue confirmed the blaze was caused by the faulty battery being left on charge. Crews contained the fire to just one unit, and managed to extinguish it a short time later.
