More than 60 primary school students in Jamaica have been hospitalised after eating THC-infused candy.
The Caribbean country's education minister Fayval Williams posted social media yesterday that the rainbow-coloured candy made the children vomit and hallucinate.
Williams shared an image of the candy, with the packaging claiming that each individual sweet contained 1000mg each. It is recommended that regular cannabis participants consume between 10 to 20mg.
Williams met with the parents and stakeholders of the school, calling the reason for meeting "unfortunate", but said she feels "confident that together we will strengthen our safety and security regime to combat the unconscionable sale of marijuana infused products to children".
"One little boy said he only had one sweetie," Williams said.
"That's how potent this product is."
Several of the children had been given intravenous drips to speed up recovery time.
Jamaica decriminalised possession of up to 57 grams of cannabis for religious, medicinal and scientific purposes in 2015 and a licensing agency for the country's legal medical cannabis industry has been set up.
Radio Jamaica reported that the Ganja Growers and Producers Association of Jamaica was pushing for more packaging regulations to ensure children aren't ingesting any THC products, and a public education programme for responsible use.
