A pedestrian has been critically injured after being hit by a car in Auckland's Ponsonby.

The crash happened about 12.40pm on Redmond St.

Cordons are in place at Pompallier Terrace and Jervois Rd, police said.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson said one person was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
