Person dies after getting into trouble in Gisborne river

One person has died after getting into trouble in the water in Gisborne this evening.

Police say they were called to the scene in the Turanganui River around 8.20pm.

The person received medical assistance, but died at the scene.

Their death will be referred to the coroner.
