A homicide investigation has been launched after the body of a man was found with "unexplained injuries" next to a vehicle in a central Auckland car park early this morning.

The man's body was found beside a vehicle in an open-air car park on Symonds St, Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin said.

A group of people made the discovery at about 5.20am.

"He appears to have been assaulted, and died prior to being found," Baldwin said.

The man had been seen on CCTV in his car at a petrol station on the corner of Karangahape Rd and Ponsonby Rd an hour earlier.

"The community can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as a scene examination and enquiries are carried out," he said.

"At this time, we are working to identify the victim and those responsible."

Anyone who was in the area at the time who saw or heard anything suspicious has been urged to contact police on 105.
