6.8 magnitude earthquake rocks Tajikistan near Chinese border

A strong earthquake has rocked Tajikistan near the Chinese border today.

According to USGS, the earthquake was 6.8 magnitude at a depth of 20km.

The quake struck 67km west of the city of Murghob around 8.40am local time.

A 5.0 magnitude aftershock was recorded soon after the larger earthquake.

The quake was strongly felt across the border in some areas of Kashgar prefecture and Kizilsu Kyrgyz autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang, but no casualties or damage has been reported so far, state media CCTV said, citing local information officers.

The earthquake struck in a largely unpopulated region.
