Cyclone: Te Karaka community trying to salvage precious taonga

A tiny East Coast settlement is feeling the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, with much of the township of Te Karaka devastated.

Among the buildings hit was the wharenui at Takipu Marae, which has been red stickered.

Now, the community is trying to salvage precious taonga.

1News' Māori affairs correspondent Te Aniwa Hurihanganui was with members of the community as the started to consider how they pick up the pieces.
