23-million-year-old whale fossil taken from beach recovered

A 23-million-year-old whale fossil has been recovered after it was taken from Little Wanganui Beach on the West Coast over Labour Weekend.

Police said a search warrant was carried property in Granity this morning and the fossil was found at the address.

Some Little Wanganui residents confronted a man and two women using a rocksaw and chisel to cut out the fossil from the riverbank.

Inquiries into the fossil being taken are ongoing and no charges have been laid at this stage.

Police said they will continue to work with iwi to return the taonga to the local Karamea community.
