One person has died after a tanker and car crashed on SH1 near Tirau, south Waikato today.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the tanker was carrying hydrogen peroxide.
Police said another person also has serious injuries.
Police said it was called to the scene around 3.12pm along with one helicopter and two ambulances.
An eyewitness told 1News he heard a loud bang that sounded like an explosion.

The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time due to a large chemical spill.
At 7pm Waka Kotahi said SH1 is closed overnight between SH5 and SH28 (Whites Rd).
Police said motorists are advised to avoid the area.
