Police are investigating after a member of the public found a body in Waikato on Monday morning.

Police say they were called to the scene near SH25 in Waitakaruru shortly after 8:45am by the person who had found the dead body.

St John say they were called to a "water incident" on Canal East Rd in Waitakaruru.

"Two ambulances, one rapid response unit, and one manager responded to the scene."

Police are completing a formal identification process and had no further comment to make.
