7612 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, 22 deaths reported

There are 7612 new Covid-19 community cases in New Zealand on Monday, the Ministry of Health has announced.

The numbers were reported over the last 24 hours.

There are 797 people are in hospital with the virus, 64 more than Sunday.

Twenty people are in an intensive care or high dependency unit, four more than 24 hours ago.

The seven-day rolling average of those in hospital is 753, up from 582 a week ago, and up on 737 24 hours ago.

The average age of people in hospital is 64.

Twenty-two more people with the virus have died. The ministry said the deaths include one from March, two from April, two from May and two from June.

Of the 22 people who have died, five were aged in their 60s, two were in their 70s, seven were in their 80s and eight were aged over 90.

Thirteen were men and nine were women.

Six were from Canterbury/West Coast, five were from the Auckland region, four were from the Wellington region, three were from the MidCentral District, two were from Waikato and one each were from Bay of Plenty and Whanganui.

The latest deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths of people with Covid-19 to 1849.

The seven-day rolling average of deaths is now 23.

The seven-day rolling average of cases is 9689, up on 9281 one week ago, but down on 9803 24 hours ago.

Thursday's positive cases, detected through rapid antigen tests (RATs) and PCR tests, are located in Northland (162), Auckland (2248), Waikato (472), Bay of Plenty (340), Lakes (169), Hawke's Bay (352), MidCentral (308), Whanganui (99), Taranaki (151), Tairāwhiti (55), Wairarapa (121), Capital and Coast/Hutt Valley (862), Nelson Marlborough (222), Canterbury/West Coast (1263), South Canterbury (91) and Southern (694).

The location of three cases is unknown.

A total of 2239 PCR tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, while 11,831 RAT results were reported.

The number of active community cases is 67,774. They were identified in the past seven days but have not yet been classified as recovered.

An additional 363 people with Covid-19 had recently travelled overseas and arrived back in New Zealand, the ministry said.

On Sunday, 6223 community cases were announced.
