Person dies after house fire in Chatham Islands

A person has died after a house fire in a "remote area" of the Chatham Islands.

Emergency services were notified of the house fire at around 3.30pm on Thursday.

Police said a person's body was later discovered in the house.

Staff from the Wellington Criminal Investigation Branch will be heading to the islands to carry out a scene examination.
