Man dies in 'water-related incident' near Whakatāne Heads

A man has died in a "water-related incident" near Whakatāne Heads, police say.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 6.16pm on Sunday evening.

"Unfortunately, the man died at the scene," police said.

The man's death will be referred to the coroner.
