One person dead after car plunges into water in Tauranga

One person is dead and another injured after a vehicle crashed into the water in Tauranga on Wednesday afternoon.



Emergency services were called to Chapel Street, which is now closed, around 5pm.

Traffic management has been put in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

An employee at a nearby petrol station told Stuff they saw a person pulled from the water and taken to hospital after the crash.

Police say one person died at the scene and another is being treated by medical staff.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
