Two new linked cases of Covid-19 in Christchurch

Another two people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Christchurch, although the Ministry of Health says the cases were to be expected. 

Both cases are from a single household and were close contacts of the two cases identified on Thursday, bringing the total number in Canterbury to four.

"The local public health unit is gathering further information from these cases to identify any close contacts and exposure events, including any locations of interest," the Ministry of Health said. 

Health officials have identified 13 close contacts who are self-isolating and are being tested for Covid-19.

The Ministry of Health announced 125 new cases of Covid-19 in the community on Friday , 118 in Auckland, four in Waikato, one in Northland as well as the two in Canterbury. 

Traces of Covid-19 were also detected in wastewater taken from Christchurch on Wednesday, from a catchment that covers more than 300,000 people.

Further samples are also being collected on Friday from a range of locations around the Canterbury region as well as further testing in Christchurch. 

Results from those tests are expected early next week. 

Canterbury has now officially passed the 90 per cent milestone for first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, with 71 per cent fully vaccinated.

Nearly 11,000 vaccine doses administered on Thursday along with 3000 tests for the virus also carried out.  

Anyone from the Canterbury region, particularly in Christchurch, is being urged to get tested if they become symptomatic.
