Tonga records first case of Covid-19

The Pacific Kingdom of Tonga has recorded its first case of Covid-19.

Tongan Prime Minister Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa confirmed the news on Friday.

The infected person had recently arrived there on a repatriation flight from Christchurch which left New Zealand on Wednesday this week.

The case is currently in an MIQ facility in Tonga.

It may have originated from Christchurch. (Source: Other)

New Zealand's Ministry of Health issued a statement on the case.

"The case returned a negative pre-departure test before leaving New Zealand. They are fully vaccinated with the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine and had their second dose on 15 October.

"They were tested in routine Day 0 testing yesterday and returned a positive result today.

"The Ministry, along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is working with officials in Tonga to confirm the case. There will be further updates on this tomorrow."
