16mm of rain falls in 10 mins during Napier storm deluge

A storm front has seen over 16mm of rain fall in just 10 minutes at Napier Airport on Friday afternoon.

It comes as MetService issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay area.

Around 4pm, MetService issued the following update: “16.8mm of rain in 10 minutes at Napier Airport. Also the temperature was 17 degrees 20mins ago, now down to nine.”

Footage posted to social media shows a large storm rolling into Napier over the ocean.

Fire and Emergency NZ told 1News they’ve attended a number of weather-related callouts in Hawke's Bay on Friday afternoon.

MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning.

Four reports of flooding in residential and commercial buildings have come through in the past half hour.

Spokesperson Carlos Dempsey says crews had been preparing for the weather to “start ramping up” but it does appear to be easing.
