British TV personality and adventurer Bear Grylls isn't "proud" of how many close calls he's had with nature in his career but it hasn't made him any less grateful for what he learned along the way.

Grylls told Breakfast on Thursday morning from his mother's home on the Isle of Wight he had plenty of "gratitude" for nature - hairy situations included.

"I genuinely live with great gratitude in my heart," he said.

"There's been so many times over the years where it was a super close call that it could of gone either way - and they're not exactly numbers I'm particularly proud of when the game was to always stay alive - but as I've gotten older, I've tried to listen more and more that inner voice on when to push and when to steer away."

Grylls decided to put those experiences and that gratitude into a book  - Never Give Up: The Extraordinary New Autobiography - which has just been released.
