Three serious crashes in horror day on Canterbury roads

It's been a horror day on Canterbury's roads, with one person dead and another fighting for their life.

A motorcyclist died after crash involving a truck on the Rakaia River Bridge shortly before 10am.

It takes the Labour Weekend road toll to eight.

Also in Canterbury, a pedestrian is fighting for their life after being hit by a truck on State Highway 1 in Kaiapoi, north of Christchurch, while there was also a two-car crash at Templeton, on the western outskirts of Christchurch.

Police say two people were seriously injured. 

The holiday period officially ends at 6am Tuesday.
