Waiheke Island has recorded its first Covid-19 case.
Waiheke Medical Centre confirmed the case on Tuesday afternoon, and said the person had not contracted Covid on the island, instead bringing it with them from Auckland City on Sunday.
In a statement the medical centre said the case had travelled directly to their residence on Waiheke and had no contact with anyone.
"There are no locations of interest on Waiheke Island for the community to be concerned about in relation to this case," the medical centre said, while also saying the risk to Waiheke locals was low.
Waiheke local board chair Cath Handley said there was one confirmed case and "it's not a rumour".
"For most of us that will be a shock, but perhaps no surprise," Handley said.
Handley said the best thing for locals to do was get vaccinated, get tested and abide to the Alert Level 3 restrictions.
There were 94 new infections reported by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, New Zealand's highest daily total in the pandemic.
87 of the cases are in Auckland, and seven in Waikato, Ashley Bloomfield said. (Source: Other)
