Unconscious Perth driver hits father, son in front of family

October 16, 2021

A father and son in Perth suffered broken bones after being hit by a driver who suffered a medical emergency while at the wheel.

Cameron North, 53, and his eight-year-old son were at Melville Reserve when a 55-year-old driver fell unconscious, slammed through some bollards and a goal post before hitting them.

North's partner and the boy's mum, who is pregnant, and her young daughter saw it unfold, 9News reports.

The driver then continued on through busy traffic, before coming to a stop after hitting two cars.

The driver remains critically ill in hospital, despite the efforts of members of a nearby cricket club, who grabbed a defibrillator.

"It was something you only see in movies, kind of looked like you didn't want to believe what you were seeing," Mark Goodin president of the Hilton Bicton Cricket Club told 9News.

Police say it was a "freak accident".

North has had surgery on his leg, while his son suffered a broken arm and leg.
