'Significant spring storm' forecast in coming days

MetService is forecasting a “significant spring storm” in the coming days. 

A deepening low and an active front, preceded by strong and moist northwesterlies, is approaching New Zealand from the west on Sunday. 

There is a high chance of heavy rain in Fiordland and Westland south of Otira, especially about the ranges, on Monday. Spillover into the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers is also likely.

Metservice said it was forecasting, with moderate confidence, northwesterly rain for the remainder of Westland, Buller, and the west of the Tasman region on Monday. 

“For Southland and eastern parts of Otago, there is moderate confidence of heavy southerly rain on Monday and Tuesday,” Metservice said. 

There is moderate confidence of severe northwest gales in exposed parts of the Canterbury High Country and Marlborough on Monday. 

In exposed parts of Wellington and Wairarapa, Metservice said there is a high chance of severe northwest gales in the region on Monday and Tuesday. 

“On Tuesday and Wednesday there is moderate confidence of severe westerly gales in exposed parts of the Tararua District and Hawke’s Bay from Napier southwards.

“Lastly, there is moderate confidence of severe south to southwest gales about coastal parts of Otago, Canterbury and the Kaikōura Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.”
