Compliance has been high following the extension of Waikato's Level 3 boundary further south from Thursday night, according to an officer stationed at the checkpoint.
Waikato joined Auckland at Alert Level 3 on Sunday following the discovery of Covid-19 cases in Raglan and Hamilton East.
The boundary was extended further south from 11.59pm on Thursday to include the Waitomo District - including Te Kuiti, Waipā, and Ōtorohanga - after cases were discovered outside the existing boundary.
The extension will be in place until 11.59pm on Monday.
"People have actually been really, really good," Sergeant Patrick Duffy told 1News.
"We've had no grumpies at all - it's been nice.
"We've had to turn around a couple but that was just an honest mistake and they weren't trying anything on, which was pleasing, but everyone else has had all the documents that they do need and yeah, you can't ask for more."
Duffy said one car was turned around at the checkpoint after being "just out for a drive".
"Yeah, that's just not good enough at all ... 'Sorry dude, you have to go back home' and he did. He was accepting of that."
He said officers are hoping the coronavirus won't travel further south, adding that "99.9 [per cent] are doing all they can to help everyone get over this and return back to normal".
"Unfortunately, there's always those few that ruin it for everyone and they're the ones we're trying to educate, teach, learn - whether it's going to work or not, I don't know.
"My fingers are crossed."
Duffy added: "We appreciate it's tough times for everyone, us included.
"We don't really want to be here but we are and we don't really want people bringing Covid down so if everyone does their part, we'll knock this back on its head and return to normal sooner rather than later."
