34 new Covid-19 community cases in Delta outbreak

October 9, 2021

There are 34 new Covid-19 cases in the community on Saturday - 31 in Auckland and three in Waikato - the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

The latest figures were released by the ministry in a statement as there was no 1pm press conference in Wellington on Saturday.

The total number of cases in this Delta outbreak is now 1527.

The Ministry of Health also noted there is a Covid-19 case in Palmerston North Hospital currently.

Palmerston North is where the truck driver who travelled to the city from Auckland tested positive for the virus and was isolated, however the ministry did not confirm in Saturday's statement if the case in hospital is the same person.

There are currently 26 cases in hospitals; 13 in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital, eight in Auckland Hospital along with three in North Shore Hospital. The other two cases are in Waikato Hospital and Palmerston North Hospital. Seven of those cases are in ICU or HDU.

Of the 34 new cases, 11 are household contacts and a further 12 are connected to known cases. However, the other 11 cases are currently unlinked to the current outbreak. All three new cases in Waikato are linked.

There were also two cases identified at the border.

The Ministry of Health currently has 1877 contacts linked to this outbreak, of which 79 per cent have been contacted and 71 per cent have received at least one test.

On Friday, 23,735 tests for Covid-19 were processed throughout the country, including 10,568 from Auckland.

In total there has been more than 3.56 million tests for the virus processed since the pandemic began.

On vaccinations, 85,757 doses were administered on Friday, made up of 18,568 first doses and 67,189 second doses.

More than 5.7 million doses have been administered in New Zealand to date.

There were no unexpected Covid-19 detections in wastewater samples to report on Friday, however there were expected detections in Hamilton and Palmerston North on October 6 and 7.

The ministry acknowledged Sunday's importance for the Tuvalu, Samoa and Tokelau communities with October 10 being White Sunday, but those celebrating it have been asked to use virtual services or keep them within approved bubble sizes.

Waikato's efforts in response to moving to Level 3 were also acknowledged with 5000 swabs taken on Friday along with 9,946 vaccines administered in the region.

There are pop up testing sites operating today at Claudelands, Te Rapa, Karapiro, Raglan and Kawhia. The existing testing centre at Founders Theatre is also open.

Alert levels for the whole of the Waikato will be reviewed again on Monday.
