1News reporter Nicole Bremner says it “was good to give everyone a laugh” after Te Awamutu provided the noisiest of backdrops for a live cross on Thursday night.
Bremner was giving an update during the 6pm news bulletin about the unfolding Covid-19 situation in the Waikato when a boy racer, “who spied us setting up and came back from the live cross”, initially provided the loud backdrop.
If the loud muffler of the car wasn't enough, then came “a great big milk tanker” and “an alarm to let locals know there was an emergency”.
Despite all the noise, Bremner completed the cross before throwing back to host Simon Dallow.
"An unflappable Nicole Bremner in Te Awamutu," Dallow said dryly.
Following the cross, Bremner said one of the amused locals came over to explain the siren let locals know when there was an emergency. The neighbour also took the chance to get a selfie with the 1News crew.
It could potentially have been louder if it hadn’t been for camera operator Sam Walters’ good call to “position ourselves down a side street rather than the main drag” of the Waikato town, Bremner said.
After a busy couple of days covering the Covid-19 cases in the Waikato, Bremner said “it’s good to give people a laugh and have a laugh”.
“I’ve had so many texts from people, one from my mate who’s from Te Awamatu saying, ‘boy, that’s my hometown and it’s never been busier.’”
“My cameraman and I laughed all the way home.”
