The Washington National Cathedral marked the grim milestone of 700,000 American deaths due to Covid-19 by tolling its Bourdon bell 700 times, once for every 1000 deaths.
As the bell tolled on Tuesday local time, the cathedral also presented a video showing hundreds of thousands of small white flags on the National Mall that were recently featured in the exhibition, In America: Remember.
The exhibit was created by artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, and it was spread out across 20 acres of the National Mall in late September and early October.
Many of the flags featured handwritten notes of remembrance to Americans who have died during the pandemic.
On Friday, the United States crossed the threshold of 700,000 deaths from Covid-19.
The deaths during the delta surge have been unrelenting in hotspots in the South.
Despite the relatively high vaccination rates - the US as a whole is averaging 55.5% - there are still millions of Americans who, for one reason or another, remain unvaccinated and vulnerable to infection.
