Gone are the days of perfecting that loaf of sourdough as Kiwis stuck in lockdown take up another new hobby - crochet and knitting.

The Ribbon Rose, in Auckland, has been spinning out thousands of orders for wool every week as Kiwis get crafty.

“Once Covid hit, the interest from the 20-40 age group increased hugely,” The Ribbon Rose's Stephen Forlong told Seven Sharp.

"We actually expect to keep growing. We don't see this as a one-off."

Courtney Bennett organises charity Premmie Knitting Club, which knits peggy squares to make blankets for premature newborns.

"People need stuff to do but they also want to do something good with their time and this feels like they're doing something good for the community," she said.

Bennett said the group has since been "inundated with knitting".
