29 new Covid-19 community cases in Delta outbreak

There are 29 new Covid-19 cases in the community on Thursday - 24 in Auckland and five in Waikato - Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay has confirmed.

McElnay gave the updated figures at the 1pm briefing alongside Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins, Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall and Professor David Murdoch in Wellington.

The total number of cases in this Delta outbreak is now 1448.

Of the 24 new cases, seven of the Auckland cases are yet to be linked to a current case while all five of Waikato's have been connected. Just one of Wednesday's 39 cases remains unlinked from Auckland.

There are currently 23 cases in hospitals, there are 11 in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital and 11 in Auckland hospitals while one other case is in Waikato Hospital. Four of those cases are in ICU or HDU.

McElnay noted the "significant drop" in case numbers in hospital with nine patients being discharged in the past 24 hours.

The Ministry of Health currently has 1403 contacts linked to this outbreak, of which 80 per cent have been contacted and 73 per cent have received at least one test.

On Wednesday, 23,387 tests for Covid-19 were processed throughout the country, including 12,757 from Auckland.

In total there has been more than 3.51 million tests for the virus processed since the pandemic began.

On vaccinations, 70,198 doses were administered on Wednesday, made up of 18,847 first doses and 51,351 second doses.

More than 5.5 million doses have been administered in New Zealand to date.

There were also two new Covid-19 cases found at the border on Thursday.

There were no unexpected Covid-19 detections in wastewater samples to report on Thursday.
