An Auckland police officer has been taken to hospital after they were knocked unconscious during an incident on the Northern Motorway.

Inspector Peter Raynes says police were called to reports of a man throwing himself in front of traffic travelling northbound near Tristram Ave in Wairau Valley shortly after 10.20am.

He had reportedly jumped in front of a truck, causing a three-car pile up on the motorway.

After the police unit arrived, the man jumped on to the police car, damaging its windscreen. The man then assaulted the police officer after they got out of the car.

"The officer has attempted to taser the man and has been knocked unconscious by the offender," Inspector Raynes said.

Members of the public helped to hold down the offender until additional police units arrived to arrest him.

The police officer was then taken to hospital to be assessed for injuries.

"Police are ensuring that they have welfare wrapped around then following this alarming incident."

The offender was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Inspector Raynes says inquiries into the incident are still ongoing and charges are likely.

A St John spokesperson confirmed to 1News that two patients were transferred to North Shore Hospital, one in moderate condition and one in minor condition.
