Chaos at Kabul's airport as hundreds fill tarmac

August 16, 2021

There have been chaotic scenes at Kabul International Airport as hundreds — diplomats and civilians alike — try to escape the Taliban.

A sea of people could be seen on the tarmac among a handful of planes, rushing to get on the last flights out of Afghanistan.

The scenes come amid news the airport has been closed to commercial flights with military evacuations underway.

The New York Times reported by Sunday evening (local time) many civilians were still waiting inside the terminal and milling around on the apron for a way out of the country.

The suspension of commercial flights cuts off one of the last avenues to escape the country for Afghans fearful of Taliban rule.

Saad Mohseni, who posted a video of the chaos on Twitter, said it was " another Saigon moment ".

The Taliban entered the capital on Sunday (local time) after it seized nearly all of Afghanistan in just over a week.
