Boy, 15, becomes youngest Australian to die with Covid-19

August 16, 2021

A 15-year-old boy from Sydney has become Australia's youngest person to die with Covid-19.

7NEWS reported Osama Suduh tested positive for the virus after being admitted to hospital with pneumococcal meningitis.

Before his death, New South Wales' chief health officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said the boy's family allowed authorities to share some details of his condition.

It is understood Suduh died on Sunday night, but it is unclear if he caught the virus before or after meningitis, 7NEWS said.

Sydney Children's Hospital later said although Suduh was Covid-19 positive, it was not the reason for his admission and importantly is not the cause of his death.

It said he was unvaccinated for Covid, but was up-to-date with routine childhood vaccinations.

"Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network extends our sincere condolences to his family at this heartbreaking time," a spokesperson said.

"What an incredible tragedy it was for that young man to die last night," Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce told 7's breakfast TV show Sunrise on Monday.

The death toll for the June 16 outbreak of Covid-19 in NSW is 48.
