The teenager charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, in connection to a forced lockdown at Wellington High School last year, will not be convicted.
Chief Youth Court judge John Walker today revealed the youth will instead be either discharged with a record, or without a record.
The 17-year-old has been under strict bail conditions, which include adult supervision during the day and electronic monitoring.
Since the incident involving the school in November 2020, Judge Walker said the teen had been “doing everything right”.
“It’s not often I come to a case time and time again and see we’re in a forward journey. You should be congratulated on your positiveness – you’ve been very professional and made this easy for us to deliver help,” he told the teen.
The teen will remain under supervised care until he is 18 and a number of agencies are working together on a series of interventions to ensure he has a plan for the future.
This includes looking after his mental health and wellbeing, but also helping him secure a job and helping him achieve his goals.
Judge Walker told the teenager the only reason he was still in the Youth Court system was because “we want to keep you as safe as possible and give you the help you deserve”.
The Youth Court will meet again in early September.
