One year ago, on his birthday, Cameron Hill set himself a lofty goal to climb 52 peaks around New Zealand in 52 weeks.

It’s a personal challenge to test his stamina, his determination and his courage.

“For me, in this challenge, all my peaks had to be over 100 metres in elevation and have a title,” he told Seven Sharp.

The peaks also had to be close to his Christchurch home, or in the South Island at least.

From Mount Peel to Mt Aicken in Arthurs Pass, it was at about the halfway point that he started letting his friends know what he was up to.

Just about all of his summits have been solo climbs but not the biggest, Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku.

“Highest outside Mt Cook range, which is a cool achievement to tick off, 2800 metres above sea level high enough that you can feel a bit of oxygen loss at the top.”

As the sun came down on Tuesday, Cameron took his final few steps, ending a year-long adventure.
