Nearly two years on from a devastating fire , construction work continues on the SkyCity International Convention Centre in Auckland’s CBD.
The $750 million convention centre, once complete, will feature 10 eateries, 2700 square metres of meeting space, 6674 square metres of hall space and connect 1000 hotel rooms via an air bridge over Hobson Street.
In its latest announcement to the NZX in July, SkyCity Entertainment Group said Fletcher Construction estimates the building will be complete in late 2024. Before the fire, it was expected to be open by the end of 2019.
"The latest draft programme from Fletcher Construction Company Limited (Fletcher Construction) indicates completion of the NZICC in late 2024," a SkyCity spokesperson told 1 NEWS in a statement.
"Currently, Fletcher Construction is in the process of removing façade curtainwall elements from the exterior of the building which will provide them with access required to undertake necessary in-situ remediation works to some structural steel and for other areas, remove the steel to be remediated off-site.
"SkyCity is pleased to see this work progressing and continues to work with Fletcher Construction to complete the project as soon as possible."
SkyCity and the Government agreed to extend the long stop date for the convention centre’s completion from January 2025 to December 2027.
The convention centre fire broke out on the afternoon of October 22, 2019.
An investigation into the fire later revealed it was triggered accidentally by workers who were fitting the roof.
But already there’s a call for the Fire and Emergency NZ report to be retracted over accuracy. (Source: Other)
At its peak, nearly 30 trucks and around 150 firefighters were battling the fire. The blaze took 10 days to fully extinguish.
The cost of fixing the damage is estimated to be upwards of $340 million .
A further update is expected in two weeks when SkyCity releases its FY21 results.
