It was a coal and gas shortage in the 1950s which led to the creation of Meals on Wheels.
Seventy years on, it's a Kiwi institution.
There are 3000 volunteer drivers around the country, with 12,000 meals going out each week.
Customers are referred to the service by the GP and it is partly subsidised by District Health boards.
