There are six new Covid-19 cases reported at the border for the past two days, according to the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, there were no new community cases today.

The first of today's new cases arrived in the country from Saudi Arabia via the United Arab Emirates on May 19, where they tested positive on arrival.

Two cases arrived in the country from India via Qatar on May 19 and 20, where they tested positive on arrival.

Two cases arrived on a direct flight from the United States on May 20, testing positive on arrival.

Finally, one case arrived in the country from Malaysia via Singapore on May 21. They also tested positive on arrival.

All six cases have since been transferred to the Auckland quarantine facility.

As well, today the Ministry of Health said a historical case was identified after a mariner returned a weak positive Covid-19 test result before transferring to their vessel.

"The mariner confirmed they had a positive test result overseas earlier in the year and follow up serology testing has confirmed this. If this has not been reported overseas, it will appear in our figures as a historical case," the ministry said.

Since January 1 2021, there have been 62 historical cases out of a total of 496 cases.

Meanwhile, two previously reported Covid-19 cases have now recovered, bringing the total number of active cases in New Zealand today to 27.

New Zealand's total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began is 2312.

The Ministry of Health said weak positive results were recently detected in Wellington, Christchurch, Rotorua and Queenstown. However, results from further testing in Christchurch, which were outstanding, have now also come back negative.

"The Ministry’s assessment is that these weak positive results were likely from recent positive cases in managed isolation or due to recently recovered cases who are not infectious but continue to shed the virus after returning home or while travelling. There is no risk of infection from Covid-19 in wastewater."

The total number of Covid-19 tests processed by laboratories to date is 2.1 million, after laboratories processed 3978 tests on Friday and 2816 tests on Saturday.

The NZ Covid Tracer app now has 2.82 million registered users.

"Please keep up the hygiene measures that are critical to stopping the spread of the virus – wear a face covering on public transport, wash your hands, and cough or sneeze into your elbow," the ministry said.

Today's update was provided by the Ministry of Health in a written statement this afternoon.
