A critically injured child has been taken to hospital after an incident involving a vehicle in Auckland's Bucklands Beach.

In a statement this morning, police said they were called to the crash on Wells Road about 8.40am today.

"The pedestrian, a child, is in critical condition and is being transported to hospital," police said.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and will be examining the scene."

In a Facebook post, Pigeon Mountain Primary School board member Mark Eades said the incident took place on a pathway leading into the school.

"The child has been transported to hospital and our thoughts are with the family," he said.

"School remains open, and our focus is on supporting our learners and staff. Our neighbouring schools have been notified."

Eades said access to the school via Wells Road was blocked as authorities investigate the accident.

Meanwhile, he said he had contacted the Ministry of Education's specialist team who will provide support to our students, staff and community.

"We will endeavour to keep our community updated whilst respecting the wishes and privacy of the family involved."
